With advanced digitalization, fairgrounds have faced increasing difficulties. The entertainment industry has shifted more and more from the real world into a virtual one. Growing up in Nürnberg in the 1990s and early 2000s, I remember going to the Volksfest once a year as a child and being overwhelmed by the experience.

Colorful lights and airbrush-decorated façades of the Bumper Cars, Break Dance, Free Fall, and other rides. The smell of greasy food. Trance remixes of well-known Pop and Schlager hits coming from all directions.

This complete sensory overload turns the so called Rummel (germ. for fairground but also hype) into a place from another world. It is no coincidence that it has become an iconic place of fun, fantasy and longing. Its eccentric nature has enabled it to withstand crises to this day.
