Der “Do-It-Yourself”-Gedanke ist in der Skateboard- und BMX-Szene tief verwurzelt. Es geht darum, individuelle und kreative Lösungen für Probleme verschiedener Art zu finden. Die Leidenschaft, selbst anzupacken und Dinge zu erschaffen, gipfelt weltweit immer wieder im Bau von DIY-Spots, selbstgebauten Beton-Skateparks mit oft temporärer, seltener auch dauerhafter Lebensdauer. Dabei geht es nicht nur um das finale Produkt. Der Bauprozess, mit seinen Anstrengungen und Herausforderungen, birgt Unmengen Potential zu individuellem Wachstum und Erfahrung von Selbstwirksamkeit. Er ist für die Akteure ebenso erfüllend wie die anschließende Nutzung des Ortes. Da potentiell nutzbare Orte fast nie von städtischer und privatwirtschaftlicher Seite zu diesem Zweck freigegeben werden, drängt es motivierte Skater*innen und BMXer*innen oft in die Illegalität ungenehmigter Bebauung. Als Teil einer Gruppe junger Erwachsener nahm Valentin Seuss die Risiken auf sich und dokumentierte den Bauprozess von der Ortssuche bis zu gemeinsamen Skate- und BMX-Sessions am eigenen DIY-Spot in Hannover.

The hands-on mentality and passion for creating things globally culminates in the construction of DIY spots on a regular basis. These self-built concrete skateparks that are often temporary, though occasionally permanent. It’s not just about the final product. The building process, with its efforts and challenges, holds immense potential for individual growth and the experience of self-efficacy. It is as fulfilling for the participants as the use of the built spot itself. Since potentially usable locations are rarely approved for this purpose by city authorities or private businesses, motivated Skaters and BMX riders are often pushed into the illegality of unauthorized construction. As part of a group of young adults, Valentin Seuss took on the risks and documented the building process from site selection to Skate and BMX sessions at their own DIY spot in Hanover.
